Updating the CEDS 2009
The US Economic Development Administration requires that regions with the
critical "Economic Development District" (EDD) designation update its CEDS
yearly. Every five years, a completely new CEDS must be developed.
Our region completed a new CEDS in 2007 with the help of Virginia Tech's Office
of Economic and Community Development. The resulting CEDS 2007 and Tech's report
are available in the right-hand sidebar.
The EDD designation is important to our region because it makes the Eastern Shore of Virginia eligible for funding from the US EDA. In the past, US EDA funding has been used for the Accomack Airport Industrial Park, the Cape Charles Sustainable Technology Park, and the Eastern Shore Community College's new Business Development and Workforce Training Center. This funding could potentially be used for buildout of the Wallops Research Park or any economic development project our region selects by including it in the CEDS. Public involvement in the CEDS process is required by US EDA to ensure that the CEDS reflects the concerns of our citizenry. To that end, public meetings have been scheduled for Wednesday, October 28 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Metompkin Elementary School, Parksley, and Thursday, October 29 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Northampton Middle School, Machipongo, to review the 2007 CEDS and Tech's Report, collect comments/concerns about what is included, what might be added, and what quantitative benchmarks we should set to measure success.
